Teaching Policies
Class Administration
Faculty members are responsible for the organization of their classes in conformity with the general policies of the University: meeting classes at scheduled times, informing students of course requirements, evaluating student growth and progress, assigning grades to indicate progress, keeping accurate records, and promptly reporting grades to the Records Office.
Grade Appeal Procedure
A student wishing to appeal a grade or retain an "I" beyond one semester must follow these steps in the order given: The student must confer with the faculty member, stating at this conference the reason a change of grade is desired. At this meeting, the faculty member is obligated to explain the basis for determining the grade. After such a meeting, the student may appeal the grade first to the Department Head, and then to the Dean. At each level of appeal, the faculty member will be consulted, and may be required to review the criteria used in determining the grade. Grade changes will occur only with the agreement of the faculty member.
Final Examinations
Faculty members must conduct a final evaluation of their students and they must provide a copy of this evaluation to the department office at the end of each semester. The nature of this evaluation is determined by the faculty member. All final examinations are to be given during the final examination week in accord with the University examination schedule. Take-home examinations are to be turned in to the instructor during the final examination period. It is appropriate to administer a test during the last week of classes only when an additional examination is conducted during the examination week. Rescheduling of a final class examination to a time other than the scheduled period requires approval of the Department Head and the Dean. With extenuating circumstances, a faculty member may permit an individual student to take a final examination at a different time. Students whose requests for an exception are denied by a faculty member may appeal to the Department Head and the Dean. No appeal will be granted without consulting the faculty member.
Student Attendance Policy
Adopted by the university faculty on 1 June 1972: Classroom attendance is not a matter subject to regulation by the university. A student's attendance in class and laboratory is rather a matter between the student and the professor of that class or laboratory.
Office Hours
Faculty members are obligated to maintain scheduled office hours. A schedule of office hours should be posted each semester by the end of the first week of classes. Full-time faculty should schedule at least to five office hours per week.
Faculty Absences
If a faculty member must be absent from class for any reason, he or she is responsible for seeing that the class receives instruction. For an anticipated absence, the instructor will propose a plan to the Department Head. For an unanticipated absence, the Department Head will make emergency arrangements.
